What is a Disc Harrow?
A disc harrow is a heavy tillage implement using concave steel discs to cut, break, and mix soil. Used as secondary tillage after ploughing — breaks large clods, incorporates crop residue, and prepares seedbed. Also used for breaking stubble without primary ploughing.
AGROMACH manufactures 14, 16, and 18 disc heavy duty disc harrows — plain and hydraulic offset — exported to Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and used widely across Punjab, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
Disc Count — Which Size for Your Tractor?
| Discs | Working Width | HP Needed | Best Farm Size | AGROMACH Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 disc | ~7.5 feet | 40–55 HP | 5–25 acres | ₹55,000–₹62,000 |
| 16 disc | ~8.5 feet | 55–70 HP | 20–60 acres | ₹62,000–₹78,000 |
| 16 disc hydraulic | ~8.5 feet | 55–70 HP | 20–60 acres | ₹78,000–₹90,000 |
| 18 disc | ~9.5 feet | 70–85 HP | 60+ acres / commercial | ₹92,000–₹1,10,000 |
Hydraulic Offset vs Plain Disc Harrow
The key difference is how the gang angle (disc angle) is adjusted:
| Feature | Plain Disc Harrow | Hydraulic Offset |
|---|---|---|
| Angle adjustment | Manual (stop tractor, get down) | From tractor seat via hydraulic lever |
| Time saving | Standard | 30–40% faster in field |
| Price difference | Lower | +₹15,000–₹20,000 |
| Best for | Small farms, budget-conscious | Large fields, commercial use |
| Maintenance | Simple — no hydraulic components | Check hydraulic seals annually |
Disc Size — 24" vs 26" vs 28"
Larger discs penetrate deeper and handle heavier crop residue better. AGROMACH uses 24" heavy-duty discs for most models with 4mm thickness — suitable for Indian soil conditions.
- 24" discs: Most common in India, good for standard secondary tillage
- 26" discs: Better for heavy residue like paddy stubble or sugarcane trash
- Concave shape: All AGROMACH discs are concave — better soil throw and mixing
Bearing Type — Sealed vs Greaseable
This is an important quality check. AGROMACH uses:
- Taper roller bearings in cast iron housing — longer life than ball bearings
- Greaseable design — can be maintained vs throw-away sealed bearings
- Replacement cost: Individual bearing + housing replaceable without changing full gang bolt assembly
Checking Quality Before Buying
- Disc thickness should be minimum 4mm (thinner discs bend easily)
- Gang bolt should be solid MS of minimum 32mm diameter
- Frame section should be heavy MS channel — avoid thin hollow section frames
- Disc spacing: 23–25 cm between disc centres for optimal soil throw
- Scrapers/cleaners: should be adjustable and spring-loaded for sticky soil
Disc Harrow vs Rotavator — Which for Seedbed?
Many farmers confuse these two implements. They serve different purposes:
| Disc Harrow | Rotavator | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Break + incorporate residue | Fine seedbed preparation |
| Passes needed | 1–2 | 1 (but slow) |
| Residue handling | Excellent | Good but can wrap |
| Fuel consumption | Lower | Higher (PTO load) |
| Best used | After harvest, before rotavator | Final seedbed finishing |
