Cultivator Complete Guide
Rigid vs Spring Loaded — What's Right for You?

📅 May 12, 2025  |  ✍️ Samyak Agro Implements  |  ⏱️ 10 min read
📌 Quick Answer: For hard/stony soil → Rigid cultivator. For soft/loamy soil or areas with hidden stones → Spring loaded. For 35–45 HP tractor → 9 or 11 tyne. For 45–65 HP → 13 or 15 tyne. For 65+ HP → 17 tyne.

What is a Cultivator?

A cultivator is a tractor-mounted tillage implement used for secondary tillage — breaking, mixing, and aerating soil after the initial ploughing. It is the most widely used implement across all farming regions of India.

AGROMACH manufactures cultivators from 9 to 17 tynes in both rigid and spring loaded varieties, exported to Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, UAE and used by 5000+ Indian farmers.

How Many Tynes Do You Need?

Tyne count determines working width and HP requirement. More tynes = wider coverage = more draft load on tractor.

TynesWorking WidthHP RequiredBest For
9 tynes~7 feet30–40 HPSmall/medium farms, paddy stubble
11 tynes~8.5 feet35–45 HPMedium farms, all crops
13 tynes~10 feet40–55 HPMedium-large farms
15 tynes~11.5 feet50–65 HPLarge farms, commercial
17 tynes~13 feet65–75 HPLarge commercial farms, exports

Crop-Wise Recommendation

Tyne Shape — Straight vs Curved

Most AGROMACH cultivators use curved tynes (C-shape or Chisel shape). Straight tynes penetrate deeper but create more soil disturbance. Curved tynes give a better soil-mixing action preferred for Indian conditions.

Important Specification to Check Before Buying

⚠️ Common Mistake: Many farmers buy a 17-tyne cultivator for a 45 HP tractor. The tractor can't pull it at full depth — you end up using only 60% of the machine. Always match HP to tyne count.
