Why Plough Choice Matters
India has 7 major soil types ranging from light alluvial (Punjab) to heavy black cotton (Maharashtra, AP) to red laterite (Karnataka). No single plough is best for all soils. Using the wrong plough wastes fuel, reduces tillage quality, and strains the tractor.
Types of Ploughs — Quick Overview
| Plough Type | Soil Best For | Tillage Depth | Approx Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reversible MB Plough | Alluvial, loamy | 20–30 cm | ₹38,000–₹65,000 |
| Mouldboard (MB) Plough | Light to medium | 20–28 cm | ₹28,000–₹45,000 |
| Disc Plough | Hard, stony, black cotton | 20–35 cm | ₹45,000–₹75,000 |
| Chisel Plough | Hardpan breaking, all soils | 30–45 cm | ₹22,000–₹40,000 |
| Sub Soiler | Deep hardpan, compacted | 45–60 cm | ₹12,000–₹22,000 |
Reversible Plough — Most Popular in North India
The reversible plough (also called turn-rest plough) is the most popular primary tillage implement in Punjab, Haryana, and UP. It inverts soil left AND right alternately, allowing ploughing in one direction and return — no dead furrows.
- Best for: Alluvial soil, paddy-wheat rotation fields
- HP needed: 2-bottom: 45–55 HP | 3-bottom: 55–70 HP
- Pros: No dead furrows, uniform inversion, high-quality seedbed
- AGROMACH models: 2-bottom (₹38,000) and 3-bottom (₹52,000)
Mouldboard (MB) Plough — Traditional Choice
The classic plough with curved mouldboard that inverts soil to one side. More affordable than reversible. Still very popular in export markets (Kenya, Ethiopia, Nepal).
- Best for: Light to medium loamy soils, flat fields
- Disadvantage: Dead furrows — must plough in rounds
- HP needed: 2-bottom: 35–45 HP | 3-bottom: 45–60 HP
Disc Plough — For Hard and Stony Soil
Disc ploughs cut through tough conditions that would stop MB ploughs — hard dry soil, sticky black cotton soil, and fields with crop residue or stones. The rotating discs slice through rather than lift-and-invert.
- Best for: Black cotton soil (Maharashtra, MP, AP), hard laterite soil, stony fields
- Disadvantage: Higher cost, does not invert soil as cleanly as MB plough
- HP needed: 2-bottom: 45–55 HP | 3-bottom: 55–70 HP
- AGROMACH models: 2-bottom (₹45,000) and 3-bottom (₹58,000)
Chisel Plough — For Breaking Hardpan
Chisel ploughs don't invert soil — they rip through hardpan and compacted layers to improve water infiltration and root penetration. Essential for deep-rooted crops like sugarcane and cotton.
- Best for: Breaking hardpan, improving drainage, deep-rooted crops
- Depth: 30–45 cm (much deeper than MB or disc)
- Popular combinations: First pass chisel, second pass disc harrow
- AGROMACH models: 5, 7, 9 bottom chisel ploughs
State-Wise Recommendation
| State | Main Soil | Recommended Plough |
|---|---|---|
| Punjab, Haryana | Alluvial, sandy loam | 2 or 3 bottom Reversible |
| Uttar Pradesh | Alluvial, mixed | Reversible or MB plough |
| Maharashtra, MP | Black cotton (vertisol) | Disc plough |
| Rajasthan | Sandy, arid | MB plough + chisel |
| Bihar, WB | Alluvial, wet | MB or reversible |
| Karnataka, AP | Red laterite | Disc plough or chisel |
| Kenya, Ethiopia (export) | Heavy red clay | 3-bottom disc plough |
Key Factors Before Buying
- Tractor HP: Each bottom needs ~20–25 HP. 2-bottom = 40–50 HP minimum
- Soil type: Get a soil test or ask local farmers what works
- Crop rotation: Paddy-wheat farmers need clean inversion → reversible plough
- Field size: Large fields → 3-bottom for efficiency
- Budget: MB plough is most economical; disc plough is costliest
